I worry sometimes that the woman might leave me here. That she may have forgotten me.

It’s the drugs, I suppose. They induce a state of lethargy which is somehow morbid and slightly depressing. Still, on a positive note, it would not be entirely pleasant to be at home today. People do strange things on certain days of the year, holidays they call them, and celebrate these occasions with excruciating noise – jet planes flying overhead, car horns bleating and the ubiquitous fireworks. At least it’s quiet in here.

While on the subject of noise, the silver tabby went home and thank heavens for that! She was a constant chatterer and disturbed my naps with her friendly foolish conversation. Being in hospital has not improved my views on female cats. They talk too much.

Thanks : I thank the kindly souls who contributed to the bill for my – so far – 8 day stay in these clinical corridors.

Philip of Springville, Melanie of Harcourt, Ritva of Helsinki and Eddie of Pleasant Hill (near Walnut Creek! Watch out for snakes, Eddie).

Decided to drink the water, regardless.

The vet was discussing tiger snakes on the phone while she fiddled with dials on my invasive tubes. I have a number of plastic tubes inserted in various places, I won’t describe them as I would like to maintain some dignity.

Tiger snakes are venomous, she said, and will attack if they are disturbed or threatened. (As if I don’t know). But what gave me something to think about is the mortality rate of tiger snake victims. 45%!

I begin to wonder about the Meaning of Life. Why was I spared? Could this portend a future action on my part which is necessary to balance the world? Did the Norns who weave the web of fate pluck a brighter strand for me? Is there a higher purpose? Is there, after all, a God?

Feeling quite light-headed. Vague. Fuzzy. Still suspicious of the water.

Disconcerting realisation. I am famous.

The story of my courageous battle with the deadly tiger snake has circulated through the Veterinary Hospital staff right down to the cleaners. They all want to look at me or rather stare rudely. I’m not accustomed to this attention from those who have not been introduced to me. Presumption, I call it. Poor manners too. Even the tea-lady took a photo.

The student Vets are the worst with their inane comments, ‘ So this is the cat that bit the snake!’ as though it’s not in my normal day of work. If they looked in my file they would note my admission a few years back after a fracas with a possum. Tiresome creatures.

Still feeling groggy. Am positive someone is tampering with the water.
