Loukanikos is at the Rainbow Bridge.
This is sad news from Greece, the valiant dog who faced down the Greek riot police during the height of the eurozone crisis, has died. He died quietly in his sleep although I must admit I was concerned when I saw him threatened with batons, rubber bullets and watched him enveloped in teargas.
He was brave, determined and a true hero. He fearlessly defended the Greek people against the lines of armoured Riot Police.
I’ll never forget his courage under fire. This is where a dog will show more bravery than a cat, I’d be out of there in 2 seconds flat but Loukanikos would not give way.
Louki had retired from the barricades in 2012 following a spell of ill-health (from the teargas most likely). He was taken in by a loving family and crossed peacefully.
Vale, Canine Comrade! I’ll see you at the Rainbow bridge

BEAUTIFUL tribute to him – thank you Vladi! I didn’t see this story when it first happened, so I’m freshly amazed at that dog’s courage to defend his ‘friends’ from danger.

What a courageous dog. Sorry he has passed, but this is a great memorial to him.
